How to do Dumbbell Shoulder Press

Sit on a military press bench or a bench with back support, holding a dumbbell in each hand using an overhand grip.

Rest the dumbbells on your thighs, palms facing downwards.

Lift the dumbbells to shoulder height.

Rotate your wrists so that your palms are facing forward; this is your starting position.

While exhaling, press the dumbbells upwards until your arms are fully extended above your head, allowing the dumbbells to meet at the top.

Hold this position briefly, for a count of one.

Inhale as you slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.

Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Tips for Effectiveness and Safety

  • Maintain Proper Posture: Keep your back straight and core engaged throughout the exercise. This is especially important if you’re standing, as it helps prevent lower back strain.
  • Control the Weights: Ensure you’re lifting a weight that allows you to control the dumbbells throughout the entire range of motion. Avoid using momentum to lift the weights.
  • Breathe: Proper breathing technique is crucial. Exhale when you press the dumbbells up and inhale as you lower them back down.
  • Align Your Wrists: Keep your wrists in a neutral position, aligned with your forearms, to avoid strain.
  • Start Light: If you’re new to this exercise, start with lighter weights to focus on your form before moving on to heavier dumbbells.
  • Avoid Locking Elbows: Keeping a slight bend in your elbows at the top of the press can help prevent joint strain.
